Wonder Girl’s Secret Amazon Army could spark a worse civil war than Marvel’s
Wonder Girl # 5 reveals that a group of Amazons are preparing for a possible war … and have recruited a powerful superhero for their cause.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Wonder Girl # 5, on sale now from DC Comics.
wonder girl # 5 (by Joelle Jones, Adriana Melo, Jordie Bellaire and Pat Brosseau) finally confirms something that has been mentioned for several issues: the existence of a third tribe of Amazons. This tribe, now called the “Esquecida”, has been hidden in the Amazon rainforest for generations.
Although it is not known how they came to inhabit the rainforests of Brazil, the warrior Esquecida known as Potira tells Cassie Sandsmark, one of the many Wonder Girls featured in this series, that they exist. for a “period that time cannot count”. And, in another confirmation, she also tells Cassie that Yara Flor, the titular Wonder Girl, is a member of their tribe who has been lost. Cassie, however, is more excited at the prospect of a third tribe of Amazons besides the Themyscirans and Bana Mighdall. Sensing this, Potira takes Cassie to the hidden city of Akahim, the home of the Esquecida, to meet this new tribe.
Throughout the tour, Potira tells Cassie that the women of the Esquecida tribe were content to stay hidden from the male world and their so-called Amazon tribes. However, new developments have called this isolation into question. According to Potira, there has been a big change – an abandonment of duty – and the way they approach the problem forces them to prepare for war against a very familiar adversary.
Esquecida’s solution is to march on Themyscira, the home of Wonder Woman and the original Amazons once they retrieve Yara from the Olympians. On top of that, the Esquecida also recruited a surprising ally in their crusade: Donna Troy, the original Wonder Girl. How Donna fits into the equation is currently a mystery, as is why she allied herself with this group that appears to be in direct opposition to her own Amazon tribe on Themyscira.
There is also the question of how Yara separated from the Esquecida in the first place, and whether these events gave rise to a possible civil war between the Amazons.
This plants the seeds of an intriguing mystery and an exciting new addition to the myth of Wonder Woman. The answers to these questions will likely be answered soon, although that may not be enough to prevent an Amazon war.
