Fans seek to raise money (and shirts) for Newcastle Sierra Leone academy

Newcastle United fans are rallying to raise money for an academy in Sierra Leone.

More than 4,500 miles away in West Africa, a group of Newcastle fans in Bo Town, Sierra Leone are in desperate need of help.

Gateshead-born Olly Hawkins – who runs fan site NUFCBlog.co.uk – is aiming to raise money to fund their Newcastle United football academy. About fifty young footballers at U12 and U14 levels use the facilities to improve their skills but also as a refuge where poor children can eat.

Hawkins explained to Live Chronicle“The blog received a Facebook message from academy president Yusuf Kowa two years ago.

“Yusuf told us their story and we immediately wanted to support a brilliant project that is doing so much good for underprivileged children in Sierra Leone. We have raised over £500 in 2020 but that money has not been enough and we call on Newcastle fans and the club itself to support this worthy cause.

“Yusuf’s father came to study in England several years ago and made friends with a few Newcastle fans while he was here.

“He became an adopted Geordie and after graduating went home with books and magazines, talking about Newcastle United.

“His stories went well and he started a fan club in Sierra Leone dedicated to Newcastle but, just when interest was growing, he sadly passed away. His son, Yusuf, took over as chairman and wanted to continue the his father’s work, transforming a Newcastle fan club into an academy that gives underprivileged children at U12 and U14 levels the opportunity to play football.

“Unfortunately, many of the more than 50 children in their academy struggle to get three meals a day and have limited resources for school,” he said. “Your donations would go to drinking water, food, medical kits, educational materials, training kits, soccer balls and goal posts.

“We would also appreciate any Newcastle kits you have at home as we would like to send them some shirts to wear!

“Please donate what you can to support this brilliant academy that is close to our hearts, as you will not only fund the health and happiness of our new friends in West Africa, but you will help them pursue their dream of Newcastle United. .”
